Draft Legislation to Permit Broadband in 700 MHz Narrowband Spectrum

Posted June 15, 2010 by radiodirect
Categories: News

House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman Rep. Henry Waxman released draft legislation regarding the 700 MHz band. The bill would permit broadband use in 700 MHz public-safety spectrum currently allocated for narrowband communications. Sections 103 and 202 of the draft bill would permit broadband use, including commercial use in certain circumstances, in the narrowband 700 MHz voice spectrum.

The Waxman legislation also identifies funding mechanisms for public-safety broadband. The legislation would allow public-safety agencies to borrow, without interest, $2 billion from the U.S. Treasury with repayment by end 2014. The bill calls for auctioning the D block spectrum with the proceeds to be used to construct the network.

Waxman asked the National Public Safety Telecommunications Council (NPSTC) for a response to the legislation. In addition, a subcommittee on communications, technology and the Internet hearing Thursday will discuss the draft legislation and discuss H.R. 4829, the “Next Generation 9-1-1 Preservation Act of 2010.”

FCC Makes Revisions to Part 101 Rules

Posted June 15, 2010 by radiodirect
Categories: News

The FCC released a Report and Order with two revisions to the Part 101 rules governing terrestrial fixed wireless services in the 6525 – 6875 MHz band (upper 6 GHz band) and 21.8-22.1 GHz and 23.0-23.3 GHz band (23 GHz band).

The first revision provides fixed terrestrial wireless licensees with authority to operate channels with wider bandwidths of as much as 30 megahertz in the upper 6 GHz Band. The second revision allows applicants to operate pursuant to conditional authority on two additional channel pairs in the 23 GHz band.

Allowing wider bandwidth channels in the upper 6 GHz band makes an additional source of spectrum for high-capacity microwave links more readily available, FCC officials said. Expanding conditional authority in the 23 GHz band will enable licensees to activate microwave links more quickly, including links involved in critical commercial, backhaul and public-safety applications, officials said.

Motorola CPEi 800 meets data-only needs of broadband users; CPEi 885 provides a fully integrated data, voice and WiFi b/g/n solution in one compact unit

June 15, 2010

WIMAX FORUM GLOBAL CONGRESS – AMSTERDAM – June 15, 2010 – The Networks business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) has announced the expansion of its award-winning portfolio of WiMAX devices and customer premises equipment (CPE) with the addition of the CPEi 800 and the CPEi 885. These new fourth-generation plug-and-play CPEs revolutionize the economics for the delivery of WiMAX data, voice and WiFi services.

Both devices are designed to help operators reduce cost, increase market penetration and reduce customer churn. The CPEi 800 meets the diverse needs of operators and their subscribers for a high-performance, data-only modem while the CPEi 885 provides power-packed capability and functionality to support the increased demand for home-networking needs, including digital entertainment and high-speed broadband access.

“Motorola continues to deliver greater innovation and diversity in our product lines to meet today’s demands for advanced home-networking solutions,” said Fred Gabbard, vice president of product management, Motorola Networks. “These additions to our portfolio demonstrate our commitment to WiMAX, ensuring our operator customers have the right products, at the right time, to advance their businesses.”

Motorola’s CPEi 800, offered in all bands, is a basic, low-cost data-only wireless modem for fast market entry into low teledensity markets or markets where operators are otherwise challenged to deliver high-speed Internet access. The user-friendly compact CPEi 800 requires no installation and connects the subscriber to high-speed access in seconds. Its fully internal antennas are optimized for high orientation gain, with easy-to-read signal strength indicators. Availability of the CPEi 800 is planned for August 2010.

The CPEi 885 is a step forward from the widely deployed CPEi 775 and is built on the fourth-generation common platform used throughout Motorola’s CPE portfolio. It is Motorola’s first fully-integrated CPE that supports WiMAX and WiFi b/g/n.

The CPEi 885, initially offered in the 3.5GHz band, is a multiple port data, voice over IP (VoIP) and high-end WiFi (b/g/n and 2x2n) device that incorporates a 2.4GHz WiFi 2x2n router. This model also supports WiFi protected setup (WPS) which today is only available on high-end WiFi routers. It features one data and two ATA ports, making it possible for subscribers to enjoy an integrated 4G service experience. Factors such as energy efficiency, increased effective antenna gain and efficient ventilation further improve the operational lifespan of this advanced CPE.

The launch of the CPEi 800 (data only) and CPEi 885 (data, voice and WiFi) – together with the earlier launch of the CPEi 825 (data and VoiP) – complete Motorola’s new 800 Series family of WiMAX CPE products. Motorola’s fourth-generation portfolio of CPEs is available for deployment worldwide on Motorola and non-Motorola networks. The CPEi 885 is scheduled for availability in Q4 2010.

Powerful combination of technology provides advanced communications to protect the safety of first responders and citizens in the 21st Century

May 18, 2010

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – May 18, 2010 – The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today unveiled the industry’s most comprehensive plan for delivering advanced communications to the nation’s public safety agencies. This “Next Generation of Public Safety” strategy establishes the building blocks extending from the mission critical core for first-responders to realize true mobile broadband connection speeds and access to rich-media applications delivered on advanced collaborative data devices.

Motorola’s next generation of public safety solutions will maximize operational effectiveness by converging voice, image, data, and video communications from a multimedia, integrated command center and extend the reach of current mission critical communications networks. This will connect critical resources across agencies and jurisdictions, and between mission-critical two-way and broadband networks.  With stronger networks and greater capabilities, public safety agencies can supplement voice with rich data and video content to empower first responders with the best information when and where it matters most to best serve and protect their communities.

75 Years Serving Public-Safety Community

“Motorola presents a powerful combination of new technologies resulting from our 75 years of experience supporting the public-safety community,” said Greg Brown, Motorola co-CEO and CEO of Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks. “By working in close collaboration with public safety agencies, command-center operators, and first responders, we’ve developed solutions that will leverage their existing infrastructure investments in mission critical communications to transform their operations and move them to a broadband, multimedia future.”

Six Areas of Innovation

In developing its next-generation public-safety plan, Motorola has defined six key areas of innovation. They are designed to outline how public safety agencies can leverage their investments to dramatically enhance situational awareness with real-time, rich-media collaboration, improve productivity for day-to-day operations and heighten disaster preparedness.

  • Mobile broadband enables high speed wireless connections vital for multimedia applications and services. Motorola’s solutions meet critical public safety requirements for tailored and hardened capabilities that deliver the control, priority, security, and performance demanded by first responders.
  • Interoperability solutions connect critical resources across agencies and jurisdictions, link private and public non-mission critical networks and bridge two-way radio systems with emerging mobile broadband networks.
  • Integrated command enables common, intuitive user experiences and meaningful interactions across command-center applications, marrying radio consoles with computer-aided dispatch systems that converge voice, data, records and video.
  • Video security offers intelligent solutions that analyze and correlate video with voice and data and share information optimally between the command center and the field to provide a new level of situational awareness without information overload.
  • Advanced devices pairs two-way radios with multimedia data devices designed and tested to be simple and intuitive and validated by human-factor research on how individuals react in stressful situations.
  • Workforce mobility brings enterprise efficiencies to public safety responders with streamlined applications and processes to support day-to-day operations as well as incident and disaster management.

“We know the challenges are becoming increasingly complex and our customers must do more with less, which is why they need to find greater value in their technology investments,” said Brown. “Our long history and commitment to delivering innovative public-safety solutions trusted by first responders gives us a unique perspective for leading the way to a new generation of public safety solutions.”
